I know that the mint made no general issue proofs between 1965 and 1967 but I saw in the Red Book that in 1966 two actual specimen strike proofs (not sms mind you) were presented to the designer. Any one know anything about these or the story behind them? Have they been on the market recently, or at all? It seems very odd to me since ive never heard or read anything about this 1966 proof nickels besides the little blurb the Red Book shows.

Well from what I have read in the A Guide Book of Buffalo and Jefferson nickels, written by Q. David Bowers, the first two coins struck and presented to the designer were business strikes not proofs. In 1988 Walter Breen stated in his book that they were proofs that were given to the designer. Bernard Nagengast, The Jefferson nickel Analyst, second edition stated that research by Theodore Riviere revealed that they were business strike coins. This was backed up by a letter written by the late chairman of the congressional committee overseeing coinage issues, Frank Annunzio.

Ah, so the Red Book lies! I wonder why they still list them as proofs? Very interesting, thanks for the information I had been googling it for sometime and had found nothing.
