A 20 cent Seated Liberty.

Great coin! I like the contrast between the field and the devices. Nice brown color too.

Today's coin is a 1838 large cent. From 1835-1839, the Liberty Head was modified so that it appeared younger (and to my eyes more appealing then the 1816-1835 large Matron head). The 1838 is the largest of the mintage but the prices are relatively close to each other for most of the other dates. With this one I move up to 83 and 14 more coins to complete the set.

I was back and forth between this one and an AU 55 that was dipped (but still straight graded ) I ended up going with the higher grade and a little toning.

While checking my rank, I noticed that a few of us moved down in the rank and I was like:

"Who is this rabble rouser that caused all of us to move down"

Well, you won't believe it but the rabble rouser is none other than our own Wine Steven. So let me start off the post by giving our own Wine Steven a mighty impressive "You Go" and a few Smilys

Congrats on number 2 on the NGC Registry!!

As I continue on my journey, I am now at a rank of 80 with 11 coins to go. Today's coin is my oldest so far. Its a Small 6 no Stem 1806 Half Cent.

And with this one the Half Cent type set is complete.

While the 1806 is my oldest coin (so far), its not my oldest US currency. I have a Colonial Note from 10/1/1773 before the United States existed as a country.

And a continental note from 9/26/1778 when we did become united.

Today's coin is the Shield with Rays.

The coin has a pretty large die crack.

And Steve, I do thank you for your advice!! As the next batch of coins may not be AU-MS, I am actively looking for coins that have visual appeal for their grade. And while you can't please everyone, I really like the "cheetah" look of the Half Cent, and while its my lowest grade (so far), to me its a pretty coin.

Great adds hfj! I've been meaning to do a showcase of my nickels since I've had that part of the type set done for a while, but I'm actually bidding on 2 upgrades ending Thursday, both V nickels. One is a 83 NC PCGS 66CAC, 1904 PCGS 66+CAC. I thought they'd be more expensive but they're actually really reasonably priced. I don't need to upgrade, but if it stays reasonable I might go for it.
