just won't another opinion on this 1992 What I believe to be a Close AM but someone else's opinion can conform

Unfortunately, not a Close AM. The letters have to be touching or,"have just enough space between the letters for a piece of paper to slide between them."

this is a Wide AM.

For me, the easiest diagnostic is the spacing of the A in STATES. If the A is centered between the adjacent T's ... then it is a Wide AM.

As others have said above, it's the AM spacing as well as the initials you have to look at. For more details on this and to see other examples, use the search box in the upper left hand corner of every CCF page here, you'll find lot's of great into there! It never hurts to ask, but education is your best tool available!
