Thinking of bidding on a coin in an auction and it says that it has been "repatinated". How much value does a coin lose? I'm trying to set a price limit for myself and I'm sure it must lose some value.

I do have a few in my collection which I found after the fact, but they are common coins and this one is pretty rare.

Depends on the coin , we need more information and pix to help properly.
The term repatinated , simply equates to retoning ,or once cleaned now retoning
once dipped now retoning etc.

If it were silver, I wouldn't be worried about it. But, I know many collectors frown on the practice.

I suppose I object more to phony sand/desert patinas than the darkening here. This is a good looking coin. As Wayne Sayles states it in Ancient Coin Collecting, "Natural patina is always preferred, but artificial toning is sometimes acceptable. In either case, an attractively patinated coin is worth more than one without patina."

Any artificial change to a coin will effect it to a certain extend, from what I can seem the repatination appears to be done fairly well so the value shouldn't be effected too much. This coin type can sell from a few dollars to over a thousand. I sold one a number of years ago for $800. This is a nice looking coin.

Thanks guys, it never really bothered me. I do think a seller should be up front and let the buyer know. I just hate overpaying, which can happen when you are excited about a certain coin.

echizento - that's a great sale.
