I recently came across this 1882 S Morgan thats proof-like. I was of course expecting alot of die polish marks, but there is a sort of starburst effect that is present. I am newer to Morgan collecting and have never seen this before. It almost appears to be the planchet itself. Can anyone help me out with what this is? it also seems to run perpendicular to the die polish marks. Could this have been something someone did to increase the mirror finish on the fields? It goes right to the potrait and other elements with no obvious gaps from tooling or scrubbing, so I am at a bit of a loss. Thanks for the help!
That sums it up! The flow lines result when the planchet's metal flows outward from the pressure of the die, which causes it to be more noticable towards the rims
