So part of my long idle collection contains a bunch of 'cleaned' (arg) silver. Please guide me, Id like to list them all for suggestions but my gut tells me that should be it's own post. I want to dedicate this post to the topic coin. PS - some of these previously cleaned coins are beginning to retone naturally, as I've had them many years and know I never did anything to them beyond put in flips. Novice that I am, using PGCS photograde I came up with VG08. Please guide me. The real question is, just how much does prior cleaning damage the coin and value? I've had these maybe 40 years so they've been cleaned prior to then, and noted some members state they would be surprised if not most old collected silver was cleaned at one time or another. Makes sense, holds hope these are not all now page fillers.

I think I'd be more inclined to good details than vg details, that obverse rim weakness takes it down for me Cleaning does of course detract value, but especially for something like this, Draped Bust silver, there is going to be a pretty price tag cleaned or not. With coins under or near $500 I think cleaning often takes off about $100. That's super vague and general, but it is to say that just because something is cleaned, even harshly, it isn't off the market. ebay may be a great place to look and see if you can find sold cleaned items and compare with sold straight grades

The impact of cleaning also depends on the relative population of cleaned versus original coins - if the original surfaced coins become quite rare, cleaning can reduce value 5-10x or more depending on grade. For low grade like this (agree with G details, cleaned), probably closer to 2-3x reduction in value.

More pics, sure I'll try. These took a long time because (1) I'm a novice and (2) using a phone. Seems whenever I had good light there was too much glare. New England natural light today isn't happening.

Heritage is getting "all the money" now for cleaned Bust coinage; badly cleaned coins aren't the pariahs that they used to be. People are getting better at "assisting Nature" in the Toning Dept., as some have obviously snuck-through TPG. Try a different neutral background next time you take pics, like cardboard or something

I have many old coins, but I have very few of these early half dollars in my collection. What's a "lot more", a cigar box full? I'm just curious.

Tcg1964, sorry not all are old half dollars. In total I have about 20, some Twenty Cent, quarters, half's and dollars. U

This cleaning is so harsh that it looks like scratches across the bust face, like sandpapering. I'm thinking more along the lines of $250-300 on ebay, which is the going rate for holed coins. A dealer would value it much lower.
