I have three sets of half dollar coins. The first one is Franklin, the second one is Kennedy and the third one is Kennedy. Two of the sets say "1963P BU, 1964P BU, 1965 BU". The question: One set has a 1966 Kennedy coin and not a 1965. Is that an error or was it done on purpose? Thanks
Probably hand assembled in an coin holder(s) of some sort. Three types of half dollar coins and that is because one is a Franklin 90% silver half, One is a Kennedy 90% silver half and the third is a Kennedy 40% silver half. A 40% Kennedy could be any date from 1965 to and incl 1970. All the other US coinage during those years were not silver, only the half dollars were kept with some silver content but with a significant reduction. It was certainly better to have one half dollar than 5 1965 dimes or two 1965 quarters, but I don't recall much attention being paid to the 40% silver halves during those years by the ordinary person. They circulated as usual anyway. I know, I got them on my paper route.
Well, while I was typing all that above, you got some great pictures up. I never saw a mint issued set like that but they do resemble mint packaging cello. They look uncirculated and I think the idea was to show some half dollar transition type coins. Maybe somebody has more info on where the sets came from. The paper stickers don't seem all that important to me. The idea seems obvious.
