@bbn, first welcome to CCF. Second, not having a mint mark in 1972 dimes means that the coin was struck in Philadelphia. Sorry but this isn't an error.

Heavy post mint damage ( PMD) around the obverse rim. Not a mint error, just damage. Spend it.
