Silver commemoratives have always been my non-circulating favorites, except with a few examples, one side of the coin (usually the obverse has to me been just kinda blah design-wise. I was able to pick up a bucket lister or two over the past week that I'll post when they're delivered, but they're early 1900s coins. This one, tho -- the artistry/design of this modern commemorative is something outstanding IMO, and I was glad to be able to add it to the collection.

I agree, the design of the Dolley Madison silver dollar is among the finest created for a US commemorative coin - classic series or modern. Many collectors (and numismatic authors!) agree!

A few tid bits about the Dolley Madison silver dollar:

The coin was designed outside of the Mint; it was designed by artists at Tiffany & Co. The coin is the first official/released US coin to feature a private company's name/logo; "T & Co." is seen on each side of the coin.
The piece was the first coin designed by Tiffany & Co.
The coin was the first-issued US coin to depict a US First Lady; there had been pattern coins produced previously that featured Martha Washington, however. The Madison coin pre-dates the series of First Spouse gold $10 coins by eight years (1999 vs. 2007).
The coin was the first US commemorative coin to be made available for direct order via the Mint's internet web site; the Mint first began selling commemorative coins directly via its web site in March 1999. Prior to that, order forms on the web site for commemorative coins had to be printed, completed and mailed to the Mint. It was easier just to call!

I so agree. The Dolley Madison Commemorative Silver Dollar has always been one of my favorites.

Thank you commems for the information, I had no idea.

Many of the 1980s and 1990s commemoratives were blah.
I really like the 2019 Apollo 11th 50th anniversary Silver Dollar, The 2017 Boy's Town Centennial, I have some good things to say about the 1997 Botanical Gardens and the 2001 American Buffalo is really cool.

My favorite overall of the modern commemorative coins is the 2016 National Park Service Half Dollar.

I agree - the Dolly is my favorite of the modern commemoratives. I found the history behind Tiffany & Co. designing the coin to be very interesting and picked one up 3-4 years ago at a local coin show.

Another of my favorite moderns is the 2008 Bald Eagle Commemorative.
