Hi,

so I want to start collecting coins... unfortunately I have ran out of loose change around my house. Could I just walk into any Canadian bank and ask for a roll of nickels or whatever and they give me a mix of nickels or will they give me only NEW 2008 nickels. ?

Based on my experience with banks in the U.S. they will give you what they have. They may try to accomodate requests for specific dates or mixed rolls if you have an account with them. Establishing a friendship with a teller or two is helpful especially if they are collectors or understand you are a collector.

ALSO: Don't return rolls to the same bank you got them from. Chances are you'll get the returns at a later date.

As to Canada, the same is true -- whatever they have on hand.

Best idea is to cultivate a friendship with a bank teller and she can keep you notified if it looks like someone is cashing in a hoard of stuff they've wrapped themselves.

Hello and nice to see ya onboard! It used to be at one time you would go to a bank and there would be an all you can eat buffet of neat collector coins. That's pretty much dried up now leaving only the latest nickel circulating coins in rolls. Unless your looking for a RARE Variety (ie:2000P dime / half dollar) you may want to try E-bay!
Soon after I started collecting, I was introduced to E-bay and it was like being at the world's largest coin store 24/7. No coin is RARE , SCARCE, or ILLUSIVE anymore because whatever you can dream of and whatever coin you are looking for will show up on E-bay sooner or later. If E-bay was a country, it would be the 4rth largest on this planet and the way it's growing yearly it will soon be the largest!
My collection has grown by leaps and bounds, plus it's a great place to make contacts, learn about the latest coin trends, sell your coins that you've upgraded and buy the odd "diamond in the rough"!

Enjoy........................Glenn

You can get all one date rolls in a single box, depending on when you go. These are new ussues that the bank has ordered. normally, you will get rolls that are put together by an armoured car service company, who receices shipments from the mint. These are a mix of everything from IHC, Canadian, Mexican, wheats dimes washers, coins from another country close by. ANYTHING that will fit in the roll of coins sought after! I have gotten car-wash tokens in my rolls of quarters, and on one ocassion, there was a SBA doller in the roll. Even worse; you could get one of MY returns! They will have all the ugly, corroded, self-destructing zinc cents, illegibles, anything that I don't want even close to my collection! That is one of the "pros, and cons" of getting customer-wrapped coins. by the same token, you could get a bunch of rolls that were handed down thru the passing of a family member, who was not a collector, and had no conception of what the rolls were worth, and "cashed 'em in" at the bank.
Before you get started, buy a book, thatcovers the hobby. That way you will get an idea about wnat type collection you might want to put together. Foreign coins, domestic, or a mix. You will learn which coins are worth more than others, and why. You have already made a good step in the right direction: You joined a forum, and the forums are where you will find any answer you have questions dor.
Happy collecting!

Thanks for the advice guys.

I went to the bank and got $50 worth of nickels, they were a good mix. I found a couple 12 sided nickels from the 50's.

It's a lot of work to search those coins, but addictive.

Thanks again for the suggestions.

What bank did you go to? I've bought almost $50 worth of nickels, and haven't found a single Canadian 1950s yet (I have found a 1959 American though

Rogers, I'm with TD.

I just went in for some Dimes today, $100 worth. I feel a little embarrassed asking for all those rolls, I don't know why. haha! It seems like the bank tellers are friendlier towards me now too, maybe because we have something in common. We both count money?
