1953s DDR-002 LWC LDS-Early Stage C
VV Link- http://varietyvista.com/01a%20LC%20...3SDDR002.htm

Early Nov. I picked up about 100 nice rolls of mostly memorials for about $1.50 each at a local auction. Some in plastic tubes and some in red paper rolls. The ones in paper had dates on them, in pencil, from early 1981 but looked like newer tape on the ends of the rolls. The wheats included 5 rolls that were deep red from the 1 roll I've checked (1955S x4, one 1954S). The 1953S roll ended up having a mix of AU/MS coins in Red Brown.

This coin was one of three varieties in the roll. I was pleased to find it even though it has a large scrape across the top of the head. DDR's are hard to come by in the 1950's from the Denver or SF mints.
This coin is an early stage C. The large chip in the upper left what lines is present but only one of the two die chips in the middle left wheat grains is present.

Anyways, enough yakking. Here are the images. Hope you enjoy.

On Vartiety Vista, 1953-S is the only non-Philadelphia mint year from the entire 1950's wheat cents with a DDR. It would seem that, at least until memorials came around, Denver and San Francisco figured out how to pretty much stop making DDRs in 1948. Meanwhile, back in Philadelphia, 1953 is the only wheat year without a DDR. Go figure.

Thank TB.
I noticed that as well, that 1953 was the only year missing a DDR from Philly. The only other non-Philly DDR's from the entire decade I could find on the 3 sites was a 1950D and a 1959D, both on CC.

Question- I thought Philly produced all the dies in the early years and shipped them to Denver and SF, which put the MM's on them? If that's the case someone must have shipped the wrong dies to SF in 1953. LOL

@ PP55, good follow-up question in regards to the making of dies (I was thinking the same during the read)....
