I grew up in NE Ohio. We had an abandoned amuzement park there. I was thinking the other day about getting into detecting. The place was open from 1878-1978. I'm thinking the grounds would be a good place to detect at. What do you think?

I'm thinking you're absolutely right. Be sure to determine if the park is in private or public hands, and ask permission first before you hunt if it's privately owned.

sublime118,

You're talking about Chippewa Lake. I was there in the early to mid-60's. I wish I could hunt it too. Have you seen the website on it?

From that website, you may be able to determine the actual owner and get written permission.

That is indeed the place. There are several sites dedicated to the park. I lived their from 1981 until 1997. We used to sneak in and I have a bunch of memorabilia some where. I know the park is off limits, they do have security that patrol it. Before I left there was an amish guy with a rotwielder that would let us in anytime we wanted to go. But the parking lot was what I was thinking about. It was paved at one point, but over the years it has overgrown and the blacktop is no longer there. There are several spots that would be in the public areas that may be good. Next time I go up there I will check it out definately.

Welcome, grandmaks. You might want to start in public areas like schools and parks where people have congregated and dropped things, especially in playground areas. You have a river park running through the middle of your town, Boise, and I believe some pathways along the river; you might try those. Also, public areas in the older part of Boise, sort of on the NE side, might be at the top of your list.

Grandmaks, everything that pls said is correct. The problem is that most people who get bitten by the bug, look to those places first (That being said there is no such thing as a hunted out site). In addition to that getting a good 1800's map of your area and finding out where this were back then is a great idea. I did that about 12 years ago when I was living in PA. There were about 40 homesites that I never would have known existed had I not looked on the maps. I took over 200 pre-1900 coins out of the ground from those sites. If your looking for Large cents and seated silver old foundations are a great idea. Sometimes all that is there is a field with no foundation remaining. I try to find the general area, then use your detector to look for the nails. When you start to hit a large concentration of nails your usually on the right track. Square nails are a good sign!

I know this is not really a lot of help but you might know the area pretty good.

A friend of mine is very heavy into MDing he also lives less than 40 miles north of you. (sorry I can't give any more info) He was on a job north of him and the water level at a lake wes really low and an entire town was exposed. He thinks the town was covered by the lake in the 50's. He did bring his MD with him and had wonderful finds. (I honestly do not know the lakes name or location but I think it was within a couple of hours drive north)

You have so many possible sites in your area. Whites puts out a beginners guide to detecting with lots of location ideas. Every abandoned house and farm could offer something. Get permission cause in the country people don't take to trespassers very well.
