My grandmother found this interesting-looking coin and gave it to me and wanted me to do some research on it, but I couldn't find anything about toned coins, so I made an account here, and I am asking this community for help.

This is what the coin looks like, it looks crisper in real life, the image doesn't do it justice, but this is the true coloration. It looks about XF to AU according to PCGS photograde.

I just want to know if it might be worth anything or if it was caused by some chemical spill. Either way, I'm keeping it because it looks cool.

Just discolored from some unknown environmental exposure, I'm guessing. Just worth face value.

Like Coinfrog said, environmental damage and worth 1 cent.

But if your grandfather gave it to you, it's a nice keepsake.

@mrf, first welcome to CCF. Second, yes that toning is pretty snazzy and the cost of ownership is low so keep it of course if you want. I do agree with the frog though that it is only worth face value. It is interesting that one side is fully toned, while the toning is more spotty on the other side. It wouldn't surprise me if this coin rested in a liquid for some time that only covered the bottom for most of the time and splashed up onto the other surface at times. Cup holder?

Welcome and hope that you stick around! I would agree on your assessment of the grade, an AU. Grading can become tough when dealing with toning which usually conceals imperfections affecting an accurate grade. That said, and only my opinion, why not start a set of toned Lincoln's? I've seen many vividly toned beauties. If you do just educate yourself on distinguishing artificial from natural.
