I have just bought a silver medal that is really very black . dare I say rather ugly? I would love to clean it but am fully aware that this is heresy or sacrilegious or both to a true medal aficionado. Is it really that bad to polish it just once? Its not hugely valuable (circa $45) and will be kept in semi-sealed plastic thereafter so will have minimal contact with the air. Thanks for any advice.

If you really have to clean it, I would not recommend polishing it- that will just put hairline scratches all over it Purchase a product called E-Z-Est aka Jeweluster, it is a chemical dip. Dilute it to about half strength and dip it as briefly as possible, rinsing thoroughly with distilled water afterwards. I would not recommend doing this for anything valuable because it can easily go wrong in unskilled hands and remove all luster from the surface, thus damaging the coin or medal.

I agree with the E-Z-Est recommendation. I use it on common date Moragn and Peace dollars (silver bullion really) to clean them up. One 5 second dip followed by a water rinse and pat dry usually leaves them blast white. It looks unnatural on anything below EF condition though so I mainly dip AU silver.

Never use E-Z-Est on copper unless you like pink coins!
