Hi all

I've only very recently started collecting coins and at the moment I'm building up a threepence and sixpence collection from 1800s upto 1940s. Got a few shillings and half crowns also.

Any advise of best way to collect sets would be great.

All the best

from Kent!

If you want to make up date sets of British coins, you're probably better off buying the coins individually. When dealers package coins together and sell, for instance, a full set of George VI florins, the price they charge for the set is usually more than you would pay if you got the coins one at a time. But obviously you should check out ebay and other sites as you can get unexpected bargains! Best of luck!

Jpecks26:- to the CCF!
The best introductory to go considering what you have already stated is the build a portrait then a type set of the denominations you have stated.

It is possible to branch out from this core and widen the collection, or to specialise further down the track, in one of the areas that has captured your interest.

A type set in Half Crowns can be very interesting.

First of all. there is a lot of information in all the threads on this site. Punch in what you are looking for in the search bar and it should present some good threads to give you advice and a all around good read.

Portrait change is when a new monarch takes over. So does the picture of the new monarch on the coin to reflect the new rein. Or perhaps like Queen Elizabeth who's rein has been so long that they've updated her profile on coins multiple times.

Hello Jpecks26. I am from North Carolina in the United States. I confess to knowing absolutely nothing about coins from the UK. :) Wouldn't know a Pence from a Pound. Never been to England, but I sure would like travel there one day -- London especially. :) Anyhow, welcome to the Forum. I am sure you will get some advice from those expert in UK coinage. Meanwhile, I will attach a photo of one of my earliest US coins from my type set collection. Although, in British terms, I suppose this wouldn't be all that old. Welcome aboard and happy collecting!
