Of the common date/mm combinations, are some usually better struck or otherwise preferable?
I'm considering an au for my type collection.
Thanks!

Well Don, according to Q. David Bowers (in his "A Guide Book of United States Type Coins") ". . .half eagles of this design are subject to wide differences of grading opinion. Be prepared to look at. . .quite a few pieces before finding one that is just right." (p.257) He goes on to say, "Striking [in this series] varies. Look for weakness on the high parts of the Indian's bonnet and in the feather details in the headdress. On the reverse, check the feathers on the highest area of the wing. Finding a truely choice example may take some time." (ibid.)

I don't have, or want for that matter, any of these, but it seems that you should take your time and evaluate a large number of coins before selecting the one that fits your needs.

Good luck!
