I found this 2004 P LMC and my initial thought was MD however there is no evidence of a shelf whether normal MD or a high bounce MD. My second thought was it may be radial smearing but it doesn't show the tell tale signs that radial smearing leaves behind. However, that appears to be the most logical explanation for what I'm seeing. I have yet to ever have anything like this run through my loupe and quite frankly I am a little stumped on this one. I have yet to see a post on this forum questioning a cent like this though I am sure there have been. Calling on all of my knowledgeable numismatic error friends to help me out with this one.

Hm these modern LMCs have been tricky when it comes to non-obvious doubling on the obverse.

IN GOD WE TRUST does seem to have some abnormal flow to it. Especially the IN GOD part. The ear is even more difficult. If it's a doubled ear of some kind, it's very faint. If it isn't that, then a small layer of Machine Doubling might be likely, along with possible Die Deterioration Doubling that might be causing the shadow.

My analysis is coming from looking through 10,000s of these 1990-2008 cents, however I still can't be sure.

Jim, I wonder if it can be some type of die wear?

The secondary "shadowing" doesn't seem to be consistent on the devices.

IN GOD seems to be on the left side.
LIBERTY & the ear seem to be on the south side.
TRUST seems to be on the SE.

Are these marked up images of yours the areas you are referring to?

Overly aggressive die polishing?
ANA ID: 3203813 - CONECA ID: N-5637 Clean a coin that may be worth collecting? Please DON'T! When in doubt, leave it dirty!!
