No amount of soaking or electrolysis helped on this. I wasn't sure if it was a coin. I then took the drastic step of using some abrasion to highlight, with nothing to lose. But once abraded ma figure facing left showed up, at least barely. It is 22mm, and it looks like pure copper rather than bronze. Any comments?

LOL, pretty far gone. But it doesn't hurt to speculate.

The side with the circles could be a shield. Tempting to guess a Macedonian shield.

Could the other side, rotated, be an elephant right? If so, that might point to a Seleucid shield/elephant combo like Antiochos I Soter.

On the other hand, assuming there may be a legend around the circle - and given that the other side is so corroded it could be anything, perhaps a more likely candidate might be from the Macedonian Koinon. If the link works:

Hmmm. Yes, I guess it could be an elephant. (Or a space alien)

Yeah, that's a stretch. Getting back to the Macedonian Koinon, here's a comparison - I'm not at all confident in the match. Just speculation here. But it is the right size at 23mm...Claudius.

Thanks Bob. I think I'll label it as a Koinon piece.

It was found in the Balkans, dug with Roman coins.

Funny, when I first saw the image I was reminded of my Claudius coins.

What's the date on those Macedonians?

Thanks again!
