Hello, I am new at collecting coins.I live in Canada (Toronto).I have a basic question about the Proof version of 1oz silver Kookaburra. I see them as being sold at much higher prices than the regular variety( I know their mintage is much more limited). Is is worth buying them as an investment ? Do they appreciate over time because of their limited mintage,or are they considered just bullion ? Thank You in advance.

I, being in the U.S., have found the Australian Kangaroo a much better investment than the Kookaburra. While I have some of both I will concentrate on the Kangaroo from here on out!

I've seen them too.I need to read more about them though. One of my other hobbies is birds photography and I really like these creatures.I guess that's what attracted me to the Kookaburra versus anything else .Australia has very nice coins.

When you consider the issue price of the proof Kookaburra (1 oz) at around $50 and compare that to the price you can now buy them the trend is negitive. I think the Perth Mint have over supplied the number of varieties of Kookaburra coins available. They have low mintages due to the fact that they put "privy" marks on the coin and consider that different. In all in around 15 years they have produced over 250 different Kookaburra coins. From a $5 one ounce to a square 50c piece as well as 2 oz, 10oz and 1 kilo coins. An example In 2005 they produced the zodiac series, 12 different coins due to a different small zodiac sign on the coin, and had a mintage of 5000 each. In addition there is a 1 oz gold guilded edition (10,000), and a 1 oz, 2oz, 10 oz I kilo proof issue, an Evolution 10 oz issue and a square 50c proof issue. I own a few Kookaburra's, some of the designs are great. The two ounce coin is a magnificent size coin, very large without being a joke. The privy mark I most remember as a joke is the 2001 1 oz "Santa" privy mark,(50,000) I still have to get that one.

The Perth Mint killed the Kookas by the over issue of too many of them. Nowadays, if I do buy any of them, I treat it as if I am just buying a bullion coin. The Lunars are not popular here either, but at least it is saved by a large following of Asian collectors.

Collecting Kookaburra's 101
- Never buy directly from Perth Mint
- Never buy at issue price
- Pay only bullion
- Forget the series
- Low mintages only count if someone actually collects them
- This is the final year of the Kooka 1990-2006
If patient you can pick up most kookas for bullion and when you compare a kooka to an ingot or some of the other (inferior) bullion coins, extremely good value.

Well if you can buy Kookaburras on bullion price you can do very well on ebay since they sell there on average around twice that price.

Cruzi I am sure he meant proof kookas. Lims comment on the lunar coins I disagree with slightly. I sell a lot of lunar coins. I would send only 20% of my sales of lunar coins to Asia.
