Just received a 1970 uncirculated mint set and when I checked out the s mint mark penny I was shocked to see this beauty. Sorry for the glare as it is still in the packaging. Wondering if I should take it out of the wrapper and get it graded or is it worth more left in the set. Appreciate the feedback!

I wouldn't get it graded. Its technically uncirculated but has heavy scratches on the obv. Unless it clears 66 or 67, which this wont, I wouldn't grade it. BUT, on the cheaper end, if you send it to ANACS, it wouldn't be a bad choice if you just want it protected.

My question is, if part of an unopened uncirculated mint set, where did the heavy scratches come from?

Being mishandled. It might be "unopened" from the cellophane, but its opened from the protective cardboard and envelope they come in. Thin plastic isn't stopping anything.
Even better merc, How did it get a print on it?...lol I think its in a flip now that I look closer..lol

Not in a flip. Definitely was mishandled for sure. I also noticed the print on the coin but no idea how it got there considering there is no opening on the plastic. Everything is still sealed and no sign of resealing.

I'm assuming you recently purchased this set? If so, I'd return it immediately.

If it was resealed, which it doesn't look like it was. Why would they put a SD back in. Ive seen a few pretty good reseals before but usually to switch out a coin or throw a different year in to make an "error". Still a nice coin. If you do slab it, I would go with ANACS. Its cheap and will save it from any more dings

I did not purchase this. I won it from a giveaway during someone's livestream on YouTube. I'm not sure where it has been or came from before that. Was just happy to see a variety I have been looking for while coin roll hunting and have yet to find. Putting aside the scratches and fingerprint still a rare coin and I'm not complaining

Appreciate the feedback. And kloccwork I felt the same way. Would have thought if someone took the time to open the set they would have pulled out the coin instead of putting it back in. And I've looked all over the plastic and see no area that could have been resealed. It's a bit of a mystery

LOL," Definitely was mishandled for sure" -->> government employees.
Just keep it the way it is, nice variety.
