EF40 seems about right

It looks Vf-30 to me. To much wear for it to be EF-40 IMO

I'm at EF-40 sharpness, obviously cleaned at some point (note careful swabbing between portrait side rim wording), but perhaps straight at this point.

I agree with Silver Nickel .... too much wear for EF, but better than 30. Is there a 30+ grade?

Yes, there is a VF-30+, called VF-35 by TPG. This coin does look in the vicinity of XF-40 at the highest.

There is no VF35 in traditional Canadian grading. Unfortunately.

VF-35 OK for me. Doesn't worry me much that this grade is not traditional.

I believe CCCS uses VF-35, albeit very infrequently

Definitely a Very Fine rather than Extremely fine, complete middle diamond on the crown band, but pearls either side are indistinct.
Notice the pearls blur together, True EF they would not.
Still a nice piece and classic coin.
