This one smells fishy to me, will go as far to say counterfeit. Current bid $710.00 with 3 bidders. Seller also has some dubious other listings. Buyer beware. ebay listing 114632921067

Looks like a fake to me! Surfaces are off, small raised bumps are noticeable especially on the reverse. Possibly cast. Date is off, especially that 1.

A crude counterfeit to my eye. Reported, for what it's worth.

I don't spend that much money on ANY coin that isn't slabbed by PCGS or NGC.

Aside from all the other issues, this coin is Obverse II and Reverse III, which didn't exist prior to 1901. As far as counterfeits go, it ranks 10 on the lame scale. I reported and contacted the seller.
For other members' reference, Obverse II has a distinct rib of cartilage in the ear and pointed leaves. Reverse III has wingtips extending beyond the legend.

Yeah, the whole coin looks off to me, not like a genuine mint coin, especially in that grade...

ebay does not and has never shown any real effort cracking down on this type of seller. I reported this coin twice to them, emailed the seller telling them "your coins almost certainly a counterfeit". I'm just whistling in the dark. Sheezzz all the effort ebay puts in writing up 119 page user agreements telling you how they 100% enforce blahblahblah. ebay... I yi yi yi yeah

Well, winning bid was a painful 998.00 dollars out the door...and were all calling it a fake...someone won't be happy when they find out the truth... And 17 bids to boot...wow.

Sold $998. Ended up being 5 bidders, winning bidder had 140,000+ Sales/purchases.....you'd think they'd learn a thing or two by now. Or it was an overzealous shill bid. Do your research people Edit: oops, mrwhatisit beat me to it

Yeah, this fits the bill for one of the worst coins on ebay, Etsy thread...on this site. And a genuine 96-s in around AU-55 would be approximately 8.5 grand, and would look a wee bit sharper than our fake one here, and then spending 1000 bucks wouldn't be so bad. I looked at some of the PCGS examples to compare to this fake.
