Can't seem to find much on this coin... anyone reccognize the variety? It's Spanish right? And, it looks "overstruck" for lack of a better term.

Any help appreciated.
Regards, mitch

Ok I found it... I thought it said "star" but now see that's a "b" (STAUB). So it's a Brazil 960 reis, 1810-1818
No huge value, still it's a pretty cool coin.

Cool coin. According to Numista, these were usually overstruck on Spanish colonial 8 reales. That appears to be the case here. Can you make out a date and mint?

Numisma... I have not had two seconds to rub together to try to find the mint mark you speak of, and frankly the Spanish pillar dollars are a coin that I am so terribly unfamiliar with, I have no idea where the heck it would be anyway. But I will look! Lol! And as for where I came across the coin, it was in a book of ancient coins in the front of the album along with some pesos and other things from the 19th century and it just caught my eye ...had no idea what it was. Anyway I bought the whole collection and now I can go to work on figuring out what I have. Lol! The ancient coinage is really cool, and includes some crazy boat money / tiger tongue And other weird stuff from China That's of course almost impossible to figure out what the heck it is. Check out another post that I made on that under my user id

The mint mark should be just to the left of the "8R." I think I see Mexico City under the "AB," which makes sense.
The date should be under the "D.G." on the obverse. I can't see anything, though.
