I'm just now getting around to inventorying coins I inherited from my dad when he died 40! years ago.
they are of very modest numismatic value.

in the IHC folder, above several (not all, but many) of the coin slots he has written 3 letters -- cma or cmu.
i would guess 'cma'

I have searched & searched here, Wikipedia, all over the net & can find NOTHING!

does ANYBODY know what this refers to?
and, why is it important?

thanks

Best I can think of is it being a reference to where he got it from, perhaps a dealer's initials, maybe a 'C.. Monetary Association' or the like, or even a shop name but shortened.

In terms of coin terminology though, I can't think of anything that would mean that is in general use

IHCs 1859-1864 were made of copper-nickel, which is often abbreviated "CuNi." Could that have something to do with it?

The initials of the source of the coins makes the most sense to me - a relative perhaps? Otherwise, letter codes have been used by dealers to secretly record how much they paid for the coin - a ten letter word with unique letters where each letter translates to a number. We used PATHFINDER a long time ago - P=0, A=1, etc. However, it doesn't make sense that "CMA" or "CMU" is the same on many coins since it's doubtful that they all cost him the same amount. It's just the only other thing I can think of.
