I think it's an amazing commemorative for an amazing teacher. I think I'll wait for it to become available on the secondary market. Article said they aren't shipping until the end of March. I have my set of modern commemorative silver dollars so maybe I will take the initial price plunge. I don't know. Time will tell.

I found it interesting that it doesn't have a "clad" version like the other commem that is also coming out this year.

Quote: A surcharge of $10 is a part of the price for each coin. After associated expenses, proceeds from the surcharge will go to the FIRST robotics program for the "purpose of engaging and inspiring young people, through mentor-based programs, to become leaders in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics." I'm not saying that $59 is a great price either, but at least the price increase isn't wholly a greedy mint. Ever since they switched to the 999 fine instead of 90% they just skyrocketed their asking price.

I am on the fence and the price has be leaning over one side. I prefer a silver dollar and medal set because I really like those, but there is no evidence for one of those being offered yet let alone what the the medal would represent.

Having many teachers in my family I'm probably going to buy a few of these because I think they're pretty awesome and will make great gifts as well as good additions to the commem collection. Don't get me wrong... I'm NOT a fan of the price. Quote: I found it interesting that it doesn't have a "clad" version like the other commem that is also coming out this year. This isn't unprecedented.

Personally, I think they should have done something for the entire Challenger crew, not just a single person. Not interested in this one at all.

I get the sentiment and originally I thought that way as well. But as discussed in this thread, this commemorative is not intended to commemorate the tragic Challenger disaster, it's about teaching, STEM, and the desire to reaach for the stars. The 7 astronauts are represented by the 7 stars on the reverse, however.
