I've collected a decent collection of around 40 Joseon Dynasty cash coin (Sangpyeong Tongbo) coins through auctions in Korea. These coins were used as "mother coins" to push into molds to make cash coins.

They are one of my favorite coins to collect and I really love the ones with enamel still in them. Enjoy the pictures!

Those are cool. Thanks for sharing.

Could you explain more about the process these were used in or possibly post a link to someplace that does so. Sounds really interesting.

Sure! So these mother coins or seed coins are perfect, sharp examples of the coins made at the mints during the Joseon period, but they are more like mold coins. Much like folks use melted metal in molds to make knives or medallions, one side of the coin would be pressed into on side of packed mold sand and pulled out. Then the other side would be pressed into the other side of the mold sand and pulled out. An impression of the coin would be left in the mold sides would are put together. Molten brass, bronze, etc is then poured into the mold and it creates a tree like result with coins on the ends of the "branches". They clipped the coins, smoothed them down, and voila!

I guess you could say these are effectively the dies of molten metal casted coins.
