I found this coin on ebay, graded 67FB by NGC. I was a little shocked when I looked at the reverse, so I bring it to CCF to learn something one way or the other. Would you consider this FB? Why or why not?
AND, does anybody know when NGC and PCGS started marking FB and FSB on their slabs?
This coin may well be correctly graded at 67, but definitely not FB.
To be F(S)B, the bands have to appear clearly separated along the whole of their length, and the tops of the bands have to be rounded, much like the top of the old style loaf of bread.
Because this coin shines like a searchlight and graded at 67, I am guessing that in labelling it at 67, then by common human error added the FB to the grade.
Mints are guilty of major and minor errors, so it is not surprising that grading companies are capable of errors as well.
"Buy the coin, not the slab" This coin has no extra value beyond its 67 grading, unfortunately.
I agree that you need seperation the whole way across. I disagree with the rounded part. I see a lot of FSB that only have the separation, without the rounded "loaves" feature. Just look at many of the 45Ps.
On the other hand collectors who insist on the full loaves certainly have that right in their buying choices.
