I'm leaning 75/25 that it is genuine. This Fr #1274 ticks most of my boxes, but I'm still not sure. So, I thought I'd put it up here to get your thoughts. From the front, the paper and the signatures look right to me. On the reverse, the signature bleed-through looks right. However, the overall way the image appears through the paper on the reverse seems just a little different than ones I've seen on Heritage. Am I being paranoid?

It looks correct to me, but I don't have any specimens so I can't say.

My impression is that is authentic. The back of the one I have is very similar in appearance, albeit not in as high a grade as the one shown. The margins are good size for that note, I'm wondering if maybe that was a wide margin originally and trimmed? If it is, or was, a wide margin note, the person that trimmed it didn't do themselves any favors as the wide margin is much more rare. Kravitz book mentions most 1274's narrow margins as being cut down wide margins. Even so, he mentions that 1274's overall are very scarce. Thats a tough note and I'd be inclined to not let it get away!

Thanks for the input. Wide vs. narrow is a whole other thing. Doing due diligence, I found quite a mix of margin sizes certified as either wide or narrow by PMG and PCGS. There are some with this same size margin certified as "wide" with no annotation for being trimmed or altered, although the majority are wider. There are also some certified as narrow that aren't much narrower than this. Seems like there is enough variation in the cutting where it doesn't really help weeding out fakes, although it certainly impacts valuations.
If I'm able to get it for a price that makes sense, I'll post in-hand scans.

My dreams of getting an amazing deal on this at a local estate auction because I was the only one bidding that understood its worth were quickly dashed. It went for over $100 more than I was willing to fork out. However, I did get a couple coins and obsolete notes, so still a fun evening.
