There are a couple for sale on ebay right now.

And also one of the silver proof mules which only seem to have come out of the wood-work fairly recently: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/1988-50...AOSwN5hfubxH

I might have missed the point here. I thought the "mule" was created because a smaller die was used. - ten cent on a dollar. Where does a smaller 50 cent die exist? What makes that 50 cent piece a "mule"

no a mule is suppose to be any coin that doesn't have the matching dies (not saying double head or tail). That's to say any coin that if the coin has the wrong image on that design it's said to be a mule. In this case it cause in 1988 all even proofs, were suppose to be of the "Commemorating the Australian Bicentenary" design so that a Coat of Arms (normal coin) becomes a mule design as it wasn't suppose to happen that year nor does the mint make any mention of this.

Both still for sale - the silver one is not unique though I don't think.

It would be crazy to offer to pay these sorts of prices on ebay, without personally dealing with the seller, and without professional confirmation regarding authenticity.

I wonder if the account has been hacked. Look at the background of his/her previous sale pics, there is no maroon colour yet now one appears. Also, previous sales have been $50-250, yet now selling items in tens of thousands. Alarm bells ringing.
