The weak 4 seems to be a common defect on the 1943 Steel cent. The rough surface almost looks like the coin has corroded or rusted and was reprocessed. Do you know the weight?

Environmental corrosion and plating, or perhaps just a bad plating, with a grease-filled four in addition. Value: under a dollar.

It`s 2.8. Is it possible to have only one side corroded? I would think both would have been effected.

Is the edge shiny or dull?

More dull than the back of penny. So yes, dull.

Being that the edge is dull leads me to think it is not a re-plated coin. Maybe a planchet defect before being plated at/for the mint?

Clearly the somewhat common '43 P steel grease filled 4--I have a couple tubes of these. It's possible that the coin was face down on a mildly acidic/corrosive surface, with the reverse protected in some form. If so, exposure was likely for a relatively short time.

Might even be trapped plating debris from the mint.

That would explain the extra weight instead of corrosion which would take weight away.

So, with the mountains of steel cents produced--and many examined by collectors over the decades--has anyone ever seen this before? Hoping so.

Is it possible this happened during lamination of Zinc Coating?

And ijn1944, I respect you, but I cannot tell if your being serious or sarcastic.

Is this image before or after your cleaning process?

Corrosion and pitting from being exposed to some caustic environment that wasn't evident until your process.

This penny didn`t get cleaned. It was screened out easily because of how it looked.
