Hi,
A few years ago, on a trip to London I bought this old french coin from a local coin-dealer in a cheap lot for £10. It is from 1773 and bears the portrait of Louis XV. The diameter is 26mm and it weighs 5.27g. I'm not an expert on French coins and would be happy if someone could tell me the face value, mint and mintage. Thanks in advance!

to CCF!

That is a 1/5 ecu, at the time valued at 24 sols tournois. It is 917/1000 silver. There is a small cow below the wreath on the reverse, which means it is minted in Pau in the province Bearn. That makes it a somewhat rare coin.

The inscription on the obverse reads: LUD XV D G FR ET NA RE DB, which spelled out becomes Ludovicus XV Dei Gratia Franciae et Navarrae Rex Dominus Bearnie, or translated Louis XV by Grace of God King of France and Navarre, Lord of Bearn. The DB/Dominus Bearnie/Lord of Bearn part appears only on the coins struck in Pau.

The inscription on the reverse reads: SIT NOMEN DOMINI BENEDICTUM, which translates to Blessed be the name of the Lord. This is a standard inscription for French silver coins of the time.

The mintage I don't know, but I think £10 was a good price for this unusual coin!

The French coin dealer CGB states a mintage of 6867 for this coin, which is pretty low.

Wow, that's really a very low mintage. Sounds like a great Key Date.
