I recently acquired a bunch of Indian Head pennies. After going through each of them with my loop I found the 1903 with a prominent mint mark. My understanding is they didn't start meant marking until 1908.
It's certainly looks like an S and it is in the correct position in the correct size. Can somebody please help me out. Thank you

Not a mintmark. Possibly a die chip?

Well probably need sharper close ups to really determine what it is, but it's not a MM.

Would be quite a strange place for a die chip. You're sure it's not just displaced metal from a hit?

Maybe a fleck of something stuck to the coin, soak it in acetone and see if it comes off. If it's part of the surface then possibly a die chip like @Coinfrog stated.

I'm going to soak in acetone. But I have already gently touch that with a toothpick While viewing it through a loop.. It is definitely raised metal.... Possibly a die chip like you've already mentioned. Lol I thought I found the holy Grail& & &
Rest in Peace

Anyone consider the possibility that it might be a 1908 S with a damaged 8? I just spent ten minutes trying to compare the pics with my 08 S and an 03, but the OP's picture just isn't clear enough to tell.

I am thinking 1908 with a damaged 8. Wouldn't the "S" be directly under the flat part of the bow on the reverse?
