Wintered now know as annealing . During this process it is thought that the pure metal molecules rise to the serfoce and create a layer. The layer can be black, reddish, or spotted during the process.
This looks from the ground all oxidized an not legible. These dimes are just black with hardly s scrstch and the bands still have copper color. Absolutely not disagreeing with ya. Just trying to explain it better.
