A month or two ago, I was tempted on ebay by this 2005 Nachpraegung/Restrike of the 1888 Baden 5 Mark proof. I think it's a beautiful piece, but I know little about it, and I can't seem to find much on Google. Perhaps it's my own ineptness at research, but I was wondering if anyone could tell me more about it - for instance, does it have the same silver content as an original, anything concerning value, mintage etc.? Thanks in advance.

I'm wondering if it's a Chinese replica.

I have a dozen "restrikes" all of the thalers from 1600-1800. Some of these were issued in plastic holders with the name of a bank. Some of them were .999 silver, and it might be marked on the edge or hidden somewhere on the design. I see that your restrike is marked 2005.
I bought them from a knowledgeable dealer, and was sold them for a premium over silver, maybe 20% or 30% over.

Issuing marked restrikes seemed to be popular in germany for a while. All the german ones are quite clearly marked with the modern issue date. Of course having this mark is not proof they were made in germany but it is a starting point. I do not know or cannot remember if the original dies were used.

Thank you. That's certainly a start! This coin is supposedly an official German restrike, but it came without packaging or other information. I've seen other sellers on other online coin shops offering other "official restrikes" for almost double what I paid, so either I got taken, or I lucked out. I hope you or other members can tell me more.
