Or both. A die crack that turned into a die chip. Keep mind the die is progressive. The issue starts out with one thing, then adds then turns into something else later. Why did I mention the die crack first? remember the discussion about how the die forces the taller designs and it eventually twists the die. Thus the die cracks. Memorial cents often crack at corners of the building. Well this area is one of the dimes corners that can crack, and after the crack the die will loose more material and form a chip. Eventually when more of the die material breaks away, then the area get larger and becomes a break. It is progressive. (It never goes back and fixes itself) Progressive.
The the Peanuts Cartoon:
