Came across this no mint mark 1978 quarter today with the "i" missing from IN GOD WE TRUST. To me it seems like the coin was genuinely minted this way. A rare error? Common error? No error at all?

Could be a struck grease error, or what was there was taken away with vending machine damage. Note to see if all the devices are all affected at the same areas of all the devices on both sides of the coin. Flattened or scraped.

I would go with Post Mint Damage due the sever circulation of the coin.

Possibly a grease-filled die. LIBERTY seems somewhat affected by whatever happened, as well. It's tough to say for sure.
