I am still going through my father's collection and he has a roll of 1971 Ike dollars and a roll of 1972 Ike dollars. They are in very good shape, but I do not know how to grade them yet. Are they worth hanging onto? Is 'roll storage' ok or should I have them in something better? He also has a lot of Bi Dollars, are they worth hanging onto?

One thing that's noteworthy of '72 Ikes is the three types that were minted. A high relief die was used to strike the reverse side of some of the '72 Philly mint Ikes. This would be Type II. Type I used a low relief die for the reverse and Type III would be a modified version of the high relief die.
Type II in mint state condition is quite valuable, as it's believed only 100,000 or so coins were struck with that particular die. Types I and III are more common, with Type III being the easiest to find in gem grade.
Are these in original bank rolls? If they are just common Ikes you could just keep them in those rolls. If it were me, they were in gem condition and I planned on keeping them, I would put them in individual coin holders of some kind.

I have two '72 Ikes and last night I compared the two reverse sides. One of them definitely has higher relief than the other. So I am assuming that I have types I and III in my possession. That second link you listed there, jbuck, is pretty informative.

Thank you. I have the Type III in my Dansco 1972 hole (it was there first) and I added a Type I to one of the extra holes at the end of the album. I have yet to find a Type II, but I admit I have not really looked that hard for it. I do not feel like I need it (that album is full, I have three other "extras" to fill out the album) and I happened to get lucky that one of my extra "loose" 1972 Eisenhower dollars was a not the type that I already had!

Yeah, the '72's would be worth checking for the varieties. I have the type 1 and 3 in my set that I recently started. Hopefully I can find a type 2 around. Does anyone know any pricing information on the 3 1972 varieties by chance?

I just received a 1972 Ike.
I'll check the links and try and determine what variety I have.

I have a Type II That I am putting on sale in the Selling part of the Forum later today. Be on the lookout for it; it will be reasonably priced. I estimate it is about EF/AU.
