Republic copper Pattern Peso 1861, KM-PN2, PR65 Red and Brown NGC. Choice Proof, with most attractive toning showing bluish hues, and much remaining luster over pristine surfaces. A splendid example of this rare pattern, showing the bust of President Barrios. No other official issues were intended until the 1892-onwards series of the Central American Mint which adds to its importance. Scholars of this type typically accept that originals from this die come in silver, but off-metal types are accepted in aluminum as well. This copper example, with all the same diagnostics as the accepted originals, may very well be a contemporary piece or a somewhat later restrike.
