Are Chinese Coins Antique Or Replicas? (Id: 17th To 20th Century Cast Chinese Cash)

Petlovermom New Member United States 2 Posts	Posted 06/08/2020 11:00 pm Hi all! About 10-15 years ago I bought a bag of about 100 old Chinese coins from ebay. When I got them they looked like they had been dug up from the ground. I bought the coins to make jewelry, so I cleaned them. Fast forward to now. With shelter in place I started making jewelry again. Someone asked me if they were real or replicas. I thought they were real because they were really dirty, and they lacked the uniformity seen in modern mass produced items. Even coins with the same markings had some variation in size, thickness, detail, etc. They also showed varying levels of wear and tear. I know coin people are very particular about patina, and I thoroughly cleaned these coins because they were for jewelry not numismatic value. So, apart from patina, do they look real or fake? Sap Moderator Australia 16808 Posts	Posted 06/09/2020 05:06 am Apart from the cleaning, they seem fine and genuine to me. Genuine cash coins, even several hundred years old, can be quite cheap. Mintages for the QianLong Emperor (your coins numbered 5 to 10) were extremely high, and (relatively) few were melted down or otherwise lost. They normally cost less than adolalr each, perhaps even less if they were still "raw" and freshly dug up, all crusty with verdigris. Due to their method of manufacture - being cast in sand moulds, rather than struck by dies like Western coins - makes Chinese cash coins look "dirt-covered", even when they aren't. These coins have been cleaned, but not so badly cleaned that they no longer look like "cash coins". Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis Report this Post to the Staff

I didn't think they were of high value because I have multiples of the same. Example, the 12th image down I think I have 20 or 30 of. I'm also glad that they're not high value. If I had drilled a hole in a coin that otherwise was worth a lot of money my husband would have been upset. Report this Post to the Staff
