Yep, I recently acquired a 1966 Canadian mint set, which I thought just had something stuck to the outside of the plastic wrapping. But on closer inspection it turns out that a wood shaving is stuck in the pocket of the set where the quarter is located. What is odd is that the wood shaving has been in contact with the quarter, but the quarter has not toned. So do you think I should remove the coins from the mint packaging or should I just leave them in since the small piece of wood has not toned the quarter (and it is kind of funny that it was sealed in the set along with the coins 42 years ago haha)?

Thanks!

All sorts of weird things happened in the sixties. It may not be wood, wink wink, nudge nudge :)

I suggest you take the mint set to your local incinerator and BURN IT. You have to be sure it is safe. Better yet nuke it for orbit, it's the only way to be sure.

Whoa,whoa,whoa... he's talkin' crazy talk!
It's all sealed up, nice and legal like by a Canadian Government agency.
Just be careful if you ever sell cross border.

If the plio is still air tight you might be able to move/shift the chip or whatever into a corner away from the coin. I wouldn't bother opening it unless the package was not sealed... it's been this long.

Yes, if it is sealed and hasn't done any damage after all this time, it will probably be safe.

I know what that piece of wood is! Back in 1966 The Royal Canadian Mint had a Contest where if anyone would find a piece of would in their Mint set of that year, they would WIN One Million dollar$. Guess your just 40+ years too late to cash in dude?

Leave the wood in! Than 1000 years from now, when all the tree's are cut down, they can go to your sample and clone a Tree and repopulate the Earth with trees again.

What a silly thread...do I say something serious, or blame the beaver 5c for that wood chip?
I'd agree with IBGolden--try to keep the 25c out of contact, and it will be fine.
Your coins run greater risk of toning after you've openened the package, imo.

Thanks for the input, everyone! I guess that I'll leave them in there for now.

Hey, I'm surprised no one else thought of it.

I study these Canadian sets with great depth.I found myself, eye lash hairs, gum fragments, probably tooth pick fragments, dried sweat droplets/spit.The only thing left is an insect yet to be found. The mint doesn't have good hygiene. These type of error sets have no real value other than being a conversation piece.
