1964?

There must have been a bumper crop of coins minted in 1964, on both sides of the border. It seems that whenever I find an older looking Jefferson nickel, it invariably turns out to be a 1964.

Anyway, I was at the bank the other day to get some rolls of nickels to search and two of them turned out to be complete rolls of AU '64's. They're so good, you can see the laurel in the Queen's hair in perfect shape. I'm guessing someone is in the process of cashing in part of a collection. I went through them, using white cotton gloves, but no EWL's.

Zonad! I really want to know what you paid for that! I know someone with a bag, and they asked me how much they could get for it, I had nothin to tell them.

I used to search regularly, but just started a new job, so it will probably be a while until I can get back into it.

Thats funny with the 1964 stuff. I used to handle a tremendous amount of coin.I owned a fairly large amusement and vending company for 30 odd years and had literally millions of coins passing through daily.I of course could never take the time but always had an eye out for any goodies, found lots ,the 1964s popped up all the time in absolute BU , pennies in the late 90s absolutely brilliant red . How is this ? It's like they were released from old bank stock.Very strange, I am talking primarily about Canadian 1 and 5 cent, they did have high mintage's for sure but the pristine condition is baffling.

I stopped roll hunting because I often found it difficult to get rolls. The banks I visited were reluctant to give up the few rolls they had, wanting to save them for local businesses.

I will when I move... Roll hunting is great. Why have one, when you can have 40!

I'm hooked on Cdn nickels right now and have gone through 23 boxes since Sept. That makes 6 boxes per month. It can really be addictive once you learn what to look for, get a good "system" going and start finding little treasures. I put on some music, open a bottle of wine and the hours just zip by. A magnet and a 10x magnifier are your best friends.

The advantages with nickel hunting are several: I hoard all the pre-82's for bullion value. One day Ni will return to $15/lb and I'll get 10-15 cents each for the .999 Ni content; they're easier to read than cents and dimes and easier to roll; I roll the USA separately and dump them into a Coinstar when I'm stateside (instant 10% profit!); quarter rolls don't seem to have anything collectible in them anymore, you never find silver, they have no bullion value and a box costs 4x more than nickels; nickel rolls regularly spit out 1930's and 1940's and there are many varieties and errors to watch for.

I found a 1964 EWL after only 9 boxes. I get excited over the 1953's: a "shoulder fold far leaf" is worth $325 in F-12 and a "no shoulder fold near leaf" is worth $750 in F-12! Its only a matter of time...

One bit of advice: put a dot with a Sharpie on the rolls you've gone through so you dont get them back from the banks and do them over! I've been fed back my own rolls several times.

great tips Malibu.

I find 1 Silver quarter per box. I might just be lucky, so I figure on average I will find 1 silver every 2 boxes. I also think it depends on the Location, where the rolls are coming from.

Originally I wanted to get into nickels for the bullion and start a Nickel collection, but I figure it will be my last chance at Silver. I jokingly call it "The Last Great Canadian Silver Heist". pre 82 Nickels should be around for a little while yet, so I'm not too worried of a Nickel shortage. My goal this year is to concentrate on Quarters and move on to Nickels, next year. I believe Nickel is a VERY important metal now and has a bright future.

Questions...
How many Nickels are in a Box? Or how many rolls?

On average, how many pre 82's do you find per box?

Yes I faithfully search bank boxes but not Canadian coin. I am a "lincoln Variety Junkie" I will however search any roll that comes my way but as far as purchasing... I only purchase 25.00 boxes of Lincoln's. I admit I'm addicted.

Malibu, do you have an email where I could contact you with a few questions about roll hunting. Also, if youre interested I posted a topic "MSN / AIM Roll Call" where you can share a MSN "number".

Cheers.

All I'm hunting now are cent and nickel rolls. I've had no luck with quarters and very little luck with dimes. In the cent rolls, I've gotten quite a few U.S. memorials and wheaties (the oldest 1915). The nice thing with the cent rolls is that people add dimes and foreign to them as well.
