i recently ordered a few mint sets and after going through them I have a few questions.
1.why do some sets have an extra S mint cent in them?
2.why do some sets have the Ike dollar and some don't have them?
any info would be appreciated.

T J- well this is more of a question for the Modern US coin forum, but I'll answer your question anyway. The reason for this is that during the years 1971-78 Ikes were made for general circulation (except '73) and were included in mint sets. As for the sets that have S mint cents, this is due to there being general circulation cents minted in San Francisco those years. In summation, the reason why they are in the sets is because they were made for circulation that particular year.

That is correct, the Eisenhower dollar was not minted for circulation in 1973. The 1973 and 1973-D dollars were only available in the mint sets.

a quick follow-up question.
if the mint sets are supposed to have the circulating coins from those years why is the Ike missing from the '71 & '72 sets?
also, why are they not included in the '71 & '72 proof sets?

thanks again for the help.

Good question and I have no idea why!

The Eisenhower dollar was brand new for 1971, so maybe the mint do not want to add to the price of the mint and proof sets? Maybe they figured the separately available 40% dollars would satisfy collector demand? Maybe it was a mistake that was corrected in 1973 when they were included in the mint and proof sets?

Anyone have any other information?

I will have do some research on this one; maybe something will come up!
Rest in Peace

Another oddball is the 1999 SBA. It wasn't made until November, so didn't appear in the sets.
