Could someone tell me if this is considered an error? I'm new to coin collecting and found this one in a penny roll last night.

No. It is coin damage. Coin damage is just a face value coin. If there were money for damaged coins, there would be no change, as they would damaged and sold for over face value. A true collector wants mint condition coin that are of interest to him/her. Coin damage is the graffiti appearance to a coin collector.

to the CCF!

the spots look like simple water spots to me - maybe saliva spray. in either case they may turn into zinc rot at some point.

Of course - I'm still learning about this subject and my assumptions are just that.. un-educated guesses at this point.

@sunny, it's an interesting effect, as Abe looks like he's either napping, or winking at you.

What the other collectors here are saying is that it's caused by a hit to the coin (damage), just like that damage to Abe's nostril, or the scratches on his forehead. But in this case, because it hit the eye, it might look like an error.

Keep it for the novelty, or try to sell it on ebay as a "Sleepy Abe" cent (but don't expect too much).
