I have not been able to find a 1811 HJ 8E. Have an NGC MS61 labeled 1811 HJ 8E but it is really a H/T assayer. Does a clean 1811 HJ exist? Thank you for help with this.
A laudable life goal would be to get to the point where one has played with enough gold 8Es to readily answer that question!!
To clarify, would assume you mean clean HJ assayer with clean 1811 date (not the 1 over 0)...
A quick run through archives shows that while both the 1811 HJ (T/H) and also the 1811/0 HJ seem to be more common, clean date/clean assayer examples exist. I stopped looking after finding three pieces; interestingly, all three are the same obverse die (with distinct die cracks). Reverse die looks to be an exact match, also.
Thank you realeswatcher. Attached is a pic of my coin. The key is that the top legs of the H are not connected. Maybe the middle coin with the scratch on the face is not an over-assayer though the cross bar of the H is odd.
