This is one of my sweeter MORGANS(although they are all sweet).I would be open to some thoughts about the unique findings on this coin. Check out the dbl'g of the arrow shaft and the tail feathers having 7 over 4......Also look at the tail feathers, they are allunique in that #7 has a molten "metal blob" at the base, enjoy... PS:I received the new usb microscope and this is just out of the box, I know these could be better, and I hope with time I will get better, BE WELL, MIKE...

I think you'll be just fine with that microscope.

VAM-36/37 reverse, if I'm reading it right. The only differences are on the obverse; if the 4th right star is broken, it's a 37. If not, it's a 36. Here's a (big) shot of a 36 obverse:

I haven't had the chance to shoot a 37 yet.

I believe you're right, Mike. Now, here's the trouble. With that new 'scope, you're going to be going all over your existing collection, and there will be no free time in your life for the next couple of months.

Happened to me when I got my QX5. I was unavailable for a loooooong time.

VAM-37 is R-4, relatively common, and doesn't really carry a premium up to MS64-ish.

The 7/X TF's are an interesting story, though. Back in those days, it was a pretty labor-intensive effort to create a new coin, involving several steps of hand-engraving designs to end up with final dies. Then, only to find out that they'd created an anatomically-impossible design - eagles didn't have 8 tail feathers.

DOH!

It illustrates just how much work was required to produce dies, that they'd alter the original masters (thereby reducing the quality of the die) rather than start from scratch. 1878 Morgans are a fascinating study, for this and a lot of other reasons.

I really like that detail shot showing the re-engraved tail feathers--cool variety!
