I am working to curate and organize a family collection that was neglected for a couple generations. In moving on to some of the ancient and Roman coins, I would appreciate any help in identifying the coin below. I believe I found a similar listing on wildwinds, but I would appreciate any insight that others may have on the coins and if the reference is correct. Thanks in advance.

Well for a coin like this I'd personally like to see the weight, size mm's, some good edge photos, and you really should photograph the paperwork or even flips that were with it for the family for generations. Then if anyone wanted to sell it they would be best to spend the money and sent it to NGC and have them give their opinion. The more rare the coin the better the fake plus yes you can see copper compound color encrustation on a silver coin, but your photos seem to show a copper color below the surface.

Thanks for the feedback. I will follow up with the measurements. And on most of the flips there are handwritten notes I'll take some photos of those for this coin and others. Appreciate the advice.

The coin is approximately 17-18mm diameter and weighs about 4g. Unfortunately I don't have a scale sensitive enough to provide fractions of a gram. I've also provided some new photos, including the edge and the envelope that it was in. Any further insight would be appreciated. Thanks again.

Well it might have been a trick of the light as it looks better now in the same places. That envelope really helps a lot for you, and you might want to talk to the 147 year old company and see if they are interested in it. I believe you are in much firmer ground now and you can send that off to David Sear perhaps so it did not have to be slabbed by NGC and the envelope can sell with the David sear document, if he likes it. You would do quite well with this route.

Really appreciate the advice. There are some other interesting hand-written notes for the other coins that help establish the provenance too. I may post more in the coming weeks.

And yes, I saw your point in the first photos and actually switched spots because the light/phone camera was really not working well. It looks really nice in person.
