Only 1,700 business-strike Three Cent Nickels were struck in 1884, the second smallest regular-issue mintage of the series. In addition, few examples were saved by collectors in 1884, and the date has a low survival rate. In today's market, the 1884 is the most difficult issue of the series to locate, outdistancing the lower-mintage 1885. The 1884 is the key to the business-strike series. This coin is a delightful Premium Gem with sharply detailed devices and strong satiny mint luster. Intermingled shades of green and lavender toning blanket the unmarked surfaces. It appear that the "III" may just have a touch of flatness on the tops of the center part of some of the ribs on the first "I". I shopped a long time before I found one that at least to the naked eye appeared completely struck. But if you put a loupe on it there is a bit of flatness. It's an MS-65.
