I see a thin layer of metal on the surface that was struck with the rest of the coin.
I would say this is a lamination error and not damage.

In hand, it does look just as you say. Its edge is also quite sharp

Interesting question; I have a coin with a very similar set of lines--at some point after the holidays I'll try to get a photo posted--and I think it's this kind of lamination error. My question is this: how does a minting problem like this impact the value of the coin?

Value is relative to the demand for the coin. Some people like to collect coins with errors, and may pay extra for them. Again, it depends on how spectacular the error, the overall condition of the coin and general rarity. I don't collect errors and have passed on some amazing ones to other collectors here on CCF and in Australia who would have paid good money for them if they had to buy them.
