Do most or all 1922D have light strikes, or is it just some?

i have seen one on Coppercoins web page, that is graded EF, and the wheat stalks don't look EF.

In general, most 1922-Ds have weaker strikes, however you can find some with stronger strikes. I had a hard time finding one and eventually found this one on ebay. It has a pretty decent strike and graded AU55 by PCGS.

Many 1922-D Lincoln's have light or impaired strikes. The weak "D" strikes are more desirable than regular "D" (better strikes). This is, of course, opposite of traditional numistmatic standards where we search for the best strike possible.

The No "D" 1922's are the most sought after and always have weak strikes on the obverse. Some of these No "D" cents do have a strong reverse however and they are expensive and rare.

It's not so much as poor strikes, it's the worn, over-used dies. Denver was the only mint producing cent coins that year so there was a lot of pressure on them to produce. In their haste, they made a lot of sub-par coins, due to worn dies. The vast majority of the 22D's you'll see will exhibt bad die wear. Loss of obverse detail and general mushiness, on the reverse the wheat stalks will usually have a worn look with little or no detail.

Finding well-struck, EDS (early die state) 1922D's is very challenging. The Lincoln series is very complex. While grading, one must take into consideration the die states for the various years. If you see an EF grade on coppercoins, it's probably accurate as that website is run by a couple of the top Lincoln experts in the world.

Unless you're NGC or PCGS, which grade at about a 90% technical level, you need to understand the different mints and die states to accurately gauge the true wear to a coin. As I've said before, I believe a Lincoln should be graded on WEAR and not die state.

Thanks for the info guys,

Yes, Bad Thad, I noticed a 1922D in EF on Coppercoins web page, it didn't look EF to me., so I guess that was the reason.

BTW,,,billyb, That's a great 1922D you have there.

I'm getting one in VF-30 next week, and, the wheat heads was not struck that well.
