Hi all, Am looking at placing a bid on an 1852 3c silver coin. I have 2 questions: A) The date doesn't look right. Is the coin genuine? B) What would be a rough value? Numista says $30-40 yet ebay sold listing show much higher values. Thanks for your help

I'd say F Details, Scratches on this one. $40 sounds right for a straight grade, even closer to $50 for a nicer example. I'd cut that value almost in half for this one. Damaged and doesn't have that great of eye appeal IMO.
Date looks ok to me

Buyer's remorse would set in pretty quick for me if I bought this one, due to poor eye-appeal, as Ty2020b commented on.

For some reason the 3¢ Silvers usually are overbid on ebay.

Not a fan of the discoloration on this one.

It looks like it had a piece of tape on it or something. I have wanted to get one of these for a while, but they do seem to be well overpriced, at least compared to price guides, which I guess are wrong!

Yes, I do think it has had sticky tape on it. The residue should come off with some eucaplyptus oil and acetone. Will put a bid of $20 however I'm sure I'll be outbid. Australian coin collectors seem to be paying big bucks for coins of late.

I'd totally give you $20 for that one. No buyer's remorse.

Update: I was going to put a bid of $20 but bidding was already $25. With a bid increment of $5 it would mean at minimum a $30 win bid. Add 18.5% buyers premium and it's already $35. Not sure what the winning bid was, but more than I think the coin was worth. But that's typical of Aussie coin auctions. I would gladly pay $35 for txgolfer56's coin!

The coin looks genuine to me. That said, if it is/was a die struck counterfeit, a serious collector of those would probably pay $60 or more. For a frame of reference on the lower grade pieces, ashow dealer recently paid me $38, apience for a group of full rim G-VG trimes. If one browses ebay, a surpising percentage of trimes listed are lower grade, damaged and/or holed. That said, there appears to be significant collector demand for decent, yet cheaper lower grades of this issue.

Slight hit on the 2. Genuine.
However, the 1852 is the single most common 3CS at 18M minted and you can do better for the money.

Thanks for the comments. I do wonder though, if the bulk of the 18m coins that still exist are to be found in the hands of US collectors so one would expect to pay a higher premium for the same coin in Australia or pay additional shipping to get one from USA.
And as a side note, what do Americans call the half dollar when at the till? A "half dollar" or "50 cents".

Seriously, akin to the dollar coins here, it's rare that I see a half dollar. Indeed, on some occasions that I've spent one of those coins here, the cashier has had to call a manager! These coins may start to circulate more, as inflation grows.
